The Class By Name

(I am not a number, I am a free locomotive!)

Not unusually for the crack express locomotives of the Western Region of British Rail, all of the class were "namers". The names chosen cemented the region's close ties with the Royal Navy. With two exceptions the names applied shortly after arrival from the midland region were not removed until withdrawal.
