The Monarch of the Glen

Well 2005 started with perhaps the class 50 tour of the decade. Pathfinder's Monarch of the Glen saw 50049 and 50031 returning to Scotland for a long weekend. During this time the pair traveled from Swindon via the West Midlands and the West Coast Main Line to the West Highland route as far as Mallaig (stopping off for two nights at Fort William). The train returning via the Forth Bridge, Dundee and an overnight stay in Glasgow.

We are hoping to get permission to use more photos on this page over next few days so please visit it again.

Before the trip started, Defiance and Hood stand at Swindon following a light sprinkling of snow.

Following the late rerouting of the tour, the train didn't make Oban, but the compensation was a trip to Dundee and as a result, the opportunity to pass both ways over the Forth Bridge.
