50 049 "Defiance" Overhaul 2009-2011

At the beginning of 2009 it was recognised that Defiance would need a complete bogie overhaul and new wheelsets if '49 was to continue to operate on the mainline.

Defiance was lifted and placed on accommodation bogies in November 2009 at Pullman Rail in Cardiff. Since then the bogies have been disassembled, and the parts cleaned and tested.

New wheelsets have been acquired and have been fitted to the axles from the existing bogies.

The bogie over haul is now nearly complete

The bogie overhaul will cost around £20,000, consequently the Fund are appealing for help with funding this important work. This can take the form of part sponsorship (now available online) or special share purchases

Above: Brake mechanism parts removed ready for overhaul.

Right Top: Bogie Frame (upside down), the white marks are crack detection paint.

Right Centre: Wheelsets, axels, bearings etc now refitted.

Right Bottom: Nearly fully reassembled bogies, with overhauled traction motors fitted.

Below: Cast Bogie Maker's Plate, and EE part drawing references stamped on to the bogie frame.

While the loco is out of service a full repaint into large logo is also being under taken. The photos below show the preparation work undertaken to date.

While the bogies are being overhauled the opportunity to take out the radiators and overhaul both the radiators, shutters and the whole compartment. In the pictures above Defiance is shunted on the accommodation bogies and clearly shows the absence of these key parts.

50049 Bogie Overhaul Share Appeal

For 50049 Defiance to continue mainline operation a full bogie overhaul is required. We have already purchased new wheel-sets along with many other parts to allow us undertake the refurbishment. However, to gain the necessary certifications for continued mainline use we will have to use a properly accredited contractor to do the work. This will cost nearly £20,000 in parts, effort, tests and inspections.

This photograph shows one of our spare bogies currently under 50049 while the over haul takes place.

Some money has already been allocated, but we need to also keep funding other projects so we can have two mainline certified locos again. With two locomotives available we will be able to haul longer trains over more challenging routes, and consequently be able to undertake a wider range of tours.

Please can you help?

As little as £3.00 a month will make a big difference.

That’s right, for the price of a pint of beer every month you can play a worthwhile part in this project. And to show our appreciation for your valued contribution, shares purchased this way will be issued on a commemorative certificate at the end of 2010.

With your help we can get ’49 back where she belongs. Thank you.
